Meet Hangzhou

The spirit of Hangzhou

Beauty, enterprise
and everyday life.

In Hangzhou, landscape is something people live with: a path beside the lake, a hillside worked for tea, a place to sit and share a cup. Start with these small encounters. Then follow the same curiosity into a different kind of exchange: livestream commerce, businesses reaching overseas, digital city systems and AI moving into everyday work. The landscape and the economy are both part of the city’s story.

01 / Life by the water

Let the water
set the pace.

A famous lake and a quieter wetland offer two ways into Hangzhou: one shaped as a cultural landscape, the other opening a conversation about how a city lives with nature.

A view with a life of its own.

At West Lake, bridges, causeways and wooded shores frame a succession of views. Walk slowly enough to notice the people within them: a pause beneath the willows, a boat crossing the water, the pleasure of taking the long way round.

Another kind of city life.

At Xixi, channels, vegetation and village traces invite closer observation. Look at how water connects habitat and daily life, and how conservation and a growing city share the same ground.

02 / The world in a cup

A hillside.
A pair of hands.
A cup of tea.

Longjing, or Dragon Well, is a green tea rooted in Hangzhou’s landscape. Follow it from the growing slopes to hand processing and tasting. The pleasure is in the details: the leaf, the warmth of the pan and the attention given to a cup.

There is more to discover at China’s National Tea Museum, where tea opens into agriculture, trade, objects and the rituals of sharing.

03 / A city of ideas

Look closely.
Think a little further.

Hangzhou rewards a second look. Objects reveal earlier ways of living; today’s streets offer questions about mobility, resources and the choices a city makes.

Archaeology & ways of knowing

Water has a longer history.

Liangzhu brings an earlier urban world into focus through jade, settlement and water engineering. At Zhejiang University’s Museum of Art and Archaeology, objects offer another starting point for asking how we learn about the past.

Mobility & everyday choices

Ideas you can see on the street.

A row of shared bicycles makes a city-wide idea tangible. Use everyday transport, energy and public spaces to ask how lower-carbon choices become part of ordinary life.

04 / Industry, economy & future innovation

Ideas that move
into the world.

Hangzhou’s other landscape is one of platforms, entrepreneurs and connected businesses. Explore how a livestream becomes a sale, a local seller reaches another country, and digital systems and AI change the way people work.

E-commerce & livestreaming

From a story
to a sale.

In livestream commerce, product discovery, demonstration and conversation happen together. Follow the questions behind the screen: how does a host earn trust, how does a team choose what to sell, and what happens after someone clicks “buy”?

MIC’s Hangzhou E commerce & Livestream Immersion provides a starting point for exploring the people, platforms and operations behind this economy.

Explore e-commerce & livestreaming

Cross-border e-commerce

A local business.
A global customer.

Hangzhou is home to China’s first cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zone. Look beyond the storefront to the connected work of localising listings, taking payments, clearing customs and getting an order to its destination.

Follow the question: what does it take to sell across borders?

Digital Hangzhou

The systems
behind the screen.

City Brain, Cloud Town and smart manufacturing open a wider conversation about data: how it supports public services, connects infrastructure and informs decisions on the factory floor.

Follow the question: how does data become a useful decision?

AI & future industries

From a model
to everyday work.

AI is entering the practical work of trade, from product listings and multilingual customer service to marketing and logistics. Use these applications to ask how new capabilities become useful tools—and how people judge the results.

Follow the question: where does AI create value in the real world?

A closer look / Smart logistics

Innovation has a working life.

In a Hangzhou warehouse, mobile robots move goods through a connected logistics workflow. It is a tangible example of digital systems moving from the screen into daily operations. Bring the same curiosity to the city’s emerging industries: what is being tested, what is already in use, and what still needs to be proven?
